Auraria Higher Education Center Statement on Campus Protests

The Auraria Higher Education Center (AHEC) is grief-stricken by the loss of life and devastation in Israel and Gaza. We vehemently condemn antisemitism, Islamophobia, and discrimination. AHEC and the Auraria Campus Police Department (ACPD) acknowledge the protests and counter-protests that have occurred on campuses across the nation and continue to support the right to free speech and peaceful assembly. ACPD will continue to staff protests to foster a safe campus community. 

To ensure clarity regarding peaceful assembly demonstrations, Auraria Campus Event Services Policies and Procedures state:

“Such assemblies are prohibited inside any campus building, classroom facility, or in any instance which interferes with educational functions or other scheduled activities. Persons refusing to vacate premises upon request are subject to immediate suspension of activities and arrest under applicable municipal and state laws.”

While surrounded by news of unrest and conflict, we believe that kindness, awareness, compassion, and understanding can be remedies to the distress that people may be feeling. We encourage our campus community to be mindful of the impact on others' mental health. We encourage, now more than ever, people to check in with family, friends, and acquaintances to offer an ear or support if needed.
